Biography:
Carl Berman was born in New York City in 1915
and was interested in art from childhood. In 1934 he studied
textile engineering at the Philadelphia Textile Institute. While
working in Peru, he became intrigued with the ancient weaving
techniques still practiced by the women of the Andes. It was
then that he began his lifelong documentation of the People of
the High Plateau, crisscrossing the world in search of these
rich cultures in their hard scrabble settings, across continents,
decades and through a world war. In addition to his paintings
and diaries, he collected the costumes and artifacts he observed.
In 1975, Carl Berman moved to Charlottesville, Virginia, where
he lived with his wife, Blanche, painting right up to his death
in 1990.
Blanche Berman, a writer and traveler in her own right, has consented
to sell some of her husband's original oil paintings. She can
be reached by e-mail for prices and more information about the
paintings shown here, and others she may decide from time to
time to offer.
